Protect Infant Health! Support Key WIC Program Provisions
Urgent action is needed to support a key provision in the Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) bill which will determine whether WIC should offer more costly infant formula that contain functional ingredients.
Last week, the National WIC Association (NWA) suddenly announced that it has dropped support for a critical provision in the Child Nutrition Reauthorization (CNR) bill. The provision addressed WIC advocates' concerns about the hype surrounding the "functional ingredients" being added, with increasing rapidity, to infant formula. The escalating use of these "functional ingredients" is troubling because:
California WIC Association (CWA) remains in support of a strong CNR provision on functional ingredients. CWA is urging Chairman George Miller, whose Education and Labor Committee will consider its CNR bill in the next few weeks, to include clear language that will address this problem on behalf of WIC participants.
CWA urges all state and local WIC and breastfeeding advocates to take independent action -- as individual citizens, if need be -- and immediately contact your members of Congress to express your concerns about infant formula additives and marketing.
Contact George Miller's office and your members of Congress to urge them to include the CNR provision that directs the Agriculture Department (USDA) to get expert advice from an independent scientific body (like the Institute of Medicine) to determine whether WIC should offer more costly products that contain functional ingredients.
