NEW CALIFORNIA OBESITY REPORT: Obesity-related healthcare costs nearly double between 2000 & 2006

The Center for Public Health Advocacy recently released the report The Economic Costs of Overweight, Obesity and Physical Inactivity Among California Adults – 2006. "The study found that the cost of overweight, obesity and physical inactivity had climbed to $41 billion in 2006, nearly double the amount reported in 2000. Given California’s current fiscal crisis, both the private and public sectors would benefit from federal, state and local policies that make prevention a top priority and help ensure that all Californians live in communities that support people to make healthy eating and physical activity choices."

Hi, As a dietitian in a clinical setting, I see the health consequence of unmitigated food advertisement, increased portion size and increased varieties of high calorie foods to the public. I have always supported healthy eating, but it seems that the US healthcare is focusing on treatment and not prevention. Do you have any suggestions? thank you.... Linda
