Summary:
This article discusses the Health Impact Assessment tool developed by the Ingham County Health Department in Lansing, Michigan. According to the authors, Ingham County has been subjected to urban sprawl and more than half of the population is overweight and physically inactive. The Health Department developed a Health Impact Assessment tool which utilizes a checklist and an assessment matrix with a geographic information system to influence community development decisions. The tool is designed for planners and developers and requires them to have a pre-application meeting to review the tool and suggest improvements in the development project.
