CONFERENCE VIDEOS: Healthy Communities-Exploring the Intersection of Community Development & Health

Social determinants of health are gaining attention among public health practitioners.  The challenge is determining what specific steps public health practitioners should take in light of a somewhat limited evidence base.  Whatever evidence emerges, working with a  range of sectors will be important.  During Janet Yellen's tenure as president of the  Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco,  public health and community development practitioners began a dialogue to simply understand the objecetive of their respective sectors.

The effort continues to gain ground.  On April 21, 2011 the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston hosted a meeting that built on the San Francisco Fed's effort.  The Boston Fed meeting explored how the public health and community development sectors can collaborate to promote better health outcomes for low-income people and communities by addressing the social determinants of health.

Topics included:

  • How to leverage the connection between health outcomes and physical environments, potential partnerships between health-oriented foundations and new government programs .
  • How the health and community development sectors can attain their goals by establishing partnerships and sharing best practices.
  • The health sector has an advanced approach to data collection and outcomes measurement. Community development practitioners use a sophisticated network to implement programs.
