If low level of education is associated with poor health, then is reading at grade level important to good health?

"We teach reading for the first three grades and then after that children are not so much learning to read but using their reading skills to learn other topics. In that sense if you haven't succeeded by 3rd grade it's more difficult to [remediate] than it would have been if you started before then."

USDA report poo poo's food deserts.....sort of

The food deserts idea may be getting push-back. Most people still see overeating as a choice that is made because people lack self-control or discipline. A report released by the USDA is not going to help at all. The USDA believes food deserts exist, but the report makes it clear that there aren't many studies that say better food options lead to lowering weight.

ARTICLE: Obesity Economics 101 places focus on economic inequities as the root of health inequities

An article in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition offers a different view of what drives obesity. More supermarkets in low income neighborhoods may not be the answer if healthier foods are expensive. The make a strong case that the obesity epidemic has its roots in economics and that healthy eating/active living options may be an elitist approach to public health. Elitist---pretty strong language.
