MOVE OVER HARVARD: CDC launches obesity cost calculator for business--LEAN Works!

As you read in a blog post (6/16/09) by our fellow network member, Carol Chao, Harvard Medical School developed a return on investment calculator for preventive medical services. Today, the CDC launched a website-LEAN Works!- aimed at the business sector/workplaces. The site includes a web-based calculator for businesses to compute the cost of obesity to their bottom line.

Time magazine dedicated its June 22, 2009 issue to prevention. This may be the first time a major news magazine has placed the spotlight on prevention as a viable strategy to contain healthcare costs. Although the spotlight was not shared with population-based strategies, simply reporting that chronic diseases are preventable is a positive step in informing the public.

Community-based land use planning: MacArthur Foundation funds virtual reality project to strengthen community engagement

Harvard Medical School - prototype "return on investment calculator" that can measure the value of prevention services.

Interesting article from Science News, "Mobile Health Care: Preventative Medicine Returns $36 For Every Dollar Invested, Study Suggests". Although the article speaks mostly about individual-level preventative care (i.e. training and education around behavior management to prevent chronic disease and STDs), the algorithm they developed to measure the return on investment of preventative services could potentially be applied to community level measures.
