Description of your work (what you do, what your organization/project does...)
Cristina Tirado is the director for the Public Health Institute’s Center for Public Health & Climate Change. She has extensive international experience on health, food and environment international research programs and policy making.

Dr. Tirado is adjunct professor at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Public Health, where she is associated with the Centers of Global Health and Immigrant Health and the Center of Public Health and Disasters and conducts research on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies for health, water, food and nutrition security.

Dr. Tirado has worked with the United Nations, the World Health Organization, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and universities for 20 years in Europe, Central Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia and the Americas. Tirado has assisted the governments of more than 70 countries in the development of their food and nutrition programs, emergency preparedness and response plans and the establishment of institutional and legal frameworks for biosecurity. She has been WHO Food Safety Regional Adviser for Europe where she developed and implemented the Food and Nutrition Actions Plans for 52 countries and contributed to development of the First EU Environment and Health Strategy. Previously she coordinated the WHO Surveillance Program for Food-borne diseases in Europe at the WHO/FAO Collaborating Center at Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Berlin.

She has contributed to the Health Chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment report and she developed key policy documents for the High Level FAO Conference on Climate Change, Food Security and Bioenergy, which have lead to many publications and an on-going book. She has participated in large international research initiatives such as the WHO/European Commission project on “Climate Change and Adaptation Strategies for Human Health,” the WHO/EC project on "Climate, environment and health action plans and information systems," the EU “Sustainable Nutrition Research for Africa in the Years to Come” and the Action Against Hunger project to improve stockholders’ capacity to prevent nutrition and humanitarian crisis in areas affected by climate change.

Tirado is moderator of the UN Standing Committee on Nutrition Working Group on Climate Change and Nutrition, member of several international environment and health related associations and she has numerous research and policy publications.

Tirado obtained her Master’s and Ph.D degrees in Environmental Sciences from Cornell University. She is a collaborating investigator at the Department of Cooperation for Development at the University of Zaragoza and co-founder of an NGO for Health Equity in Spain. She was a Fulbright Scholar.
