Description:  A recent survey revealed that only one third of cardiologists acknowledged the existence of racial/ethnic disparities in cardiovascular care in general, and only 5% agreed that disparities existed in their own practice. Several professional and industry organizations have been established to bring attention to and address these disparities. Drs. Ofili, Leggett, and Ventura discuss the importance of recognizing disparate care and suggest strategies to ensure that patients with cardiovascular disease from all racial and ethnic groups are treated equitably.

Purpose/Goal

The goal of this activity is to provide education on strategies to reduce racial disparities in the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

 

Educational objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:   

• Discuss the prevalence of disparities in cardiovascular care and their effect on outcomes
• Formulate action points for addressing these disparities
• Describe factors that may improve cultural competency
