As I go about getting a better sense of how public health is connected to land use decisions, I noticed that there is very little mention about the health benefits of smart growth.  DC The StreetsBlog e-newsletter about the kick-off of work on the transportation bill did notmention health benefits.  While I am making an effort to get up to speed on the topic, very few in my field are.  There is a lot of technical material we must know to do our work.  So hats off to Lehigh Valley's Crossroads smart growth e-newsletter for discussing prevention.

Suggestion: Provide a set of stock sentences about the links between health and transportation.  I don't think the average person or professional and think of that connection when they come across a sentence such as 'public transit is key to attracting econmic development opportunities, mitigating climate change, and improving health. '  I understand the first two items in that series, but am at a loss about the reference to health.

Your obeservation must have been heard all the way to Seattle. An active transportation advocate, healthcare executive, and urban planning professor submitted an op-ed piece that discusses the implementation of a local transportation plan in the context of healthcare reform. It hits some aspects of your suggestion.
